Space was recommended to us by the architect who drew plans for the moderate extension and update that we opted to do on our house. I have commissioned a number of contractors over the years for work at home or on my business premises and therefore expect high quality, prompt service.
From his first visit to subsequent appointments Phil always adhered to time, was prompt, agreed to actions and strategies and delivered what he promised. We found this to be a really commendable feature of the organisation. Phil agreed on a time to start the job and actually called to ask if it was appropriate to start early.
The Company took care to make sure my driveway was protected against damage and fully discussed the impact that scaffolding and other temporary equipment may have on us as the project developed. His workers always arrived at the prescribed time and immediately started to work. They were tidy, efficient and fully aware of the potential stress that a building project can have on the family. We were never stressed as Phil managed the whole project professionally and sensitively.
We were always given advance warning of potentially ‘messy’ parts of the project but the care and thought that went into these times meant the whole impact of the project on our day-to day lives was minimal. I recall one occasion when following removal of a garage wall both cars were cleaned to remove traces of dust created from the removal. I also recall a time when Jack (one of Phil’s workers) was found mopping the kitchen floor after knocking through into the new orangery.
These were just two examples of the attention to detail that we experienced from Space. Phil and I agreed a schedule of payments prior to the start of the work and we would receive requests for payments based on the completed works in an electronic format. All payments were made in this way. It was convenient and easy. Work for his subcontractors were also managed in this way so it was easy to know where you stood with outgoings.
Phil was on site every day to manage the quality and progress and always available on the phone at other times. The quality of work was excellent, from his own employees and sub-contractors alike. Phil would explain options and show pictures to clarify ideas, which were very helpful.
He found specialist subcontractors to install under floor heating when we requested, and another granite contractor who found an exact match for our kitchen worktops. Commission of building contractors is a stressful and expensive experience and you want it to be right. We rarely recommend contractors to others but have been so satisfied with every aspect of the service we received from Space that we would have no hesitation in recommending them to others. We are happy to confirm this by telephone or by a visit to our property.

I have used “Space & Design” for my last three projects over the last 2 years which comprised of major house renovations – on each project, time scales were submitted prior to commencement which were completed on time even though I requested some modifications to the specification during the project. Having just exchanged on a house in the area, we wanted to to make some essential improvements and repairs before we moved over from Yorkshire. We asked around, and Lee Irving was recommended to me by a local property developer who had used Lee on some of his own Projects. I'm glad he did; Lee was very helpful, meeting me at the house, talking me through the planned work and making suggestions for less expensive alternatives.
I had full quotes in advance. When we got possession of the house on purchase, we discovered that what we (and our surveyor) had thought would be some minor joist repairs on the ground floor actually required new joists and floorboarding across two full rooms. Lee got on with the task immediately. He brought in extra joiners and cracked on, whilst still keeping an eye on costs. All told, the improvements involved joinery, plastering, electrics, plumbing, installing a beam in place of a supporting wall, and decoration from top to bottom.
All of Lee's team were friendly and competent, and Lee was on site each day to check progress and to ensure the right men and materials were available for the next day. He also liaised with the structural engineer and Building Control officer about installation of the supporting beam for the new through-room. We can highly recommend Lee Irving and his firm, Space Design and Build.

After we had our plans agreed, we invited a number of local building companies to come and have a look and provide us with a quote.
As two busy people part of our selection criteria was someone who was happy to manage the full project.
Phil from Space right from the first meeting gave us confidence that he could do that for us. We took out a number of references before we gave him the job and asked questions around things which were important to us, did the job come in budget, reliability, tidiness and was the job completed in the agreed time. All the responses came back positive and now that we have completed the job the answer to our questions are bang on.
Phil introduced us to some of his trade people he recommends, Kitchen Company, electrician, painter and tiler. We used them all and Phil arranged the work schedule direct which was so much easier than us doing it ourselves.
Overall we are very happy with Space and particularly Phil. He run the project very well, good attention to detail and kept us informed throughout. If something was not quite right he was more than happy to find a way around it.
Doing an extension and putting a new kitchen in does cause disruption, Phil managed to keep that to a minimum and in the agreed time, which we are very grateful for. I would have no doubt in recommending Space and Phil.
